Re: Funny women rule!
Sat, February 4, 2006 - 11:17 AMThe specific incedent they point to that men worry about is being the butt of a wisecrack while in public, and being embarrassed in front of their friends.... OK, fine. So find a woman with a sense of humour that doesn't involve degrading you publicly as part of her repertoire. 'Nista and I make each other laugh, in public, a lot. Neither one of us does so at the expense of the other; that's just mean.

Re: Funny women rule!
Sat, February 4, 2006 - 4:24 PMIn some ways it makes sense that some men would prefer women to be receptive to their humor more. Many men and women use humor to attract attention to themselves, if your partnr laughs at your jokes then they accept you. Perhaps in the group of men studied the men were more likely to be in need of this type of acceptance from their partners.
Course, maybe men are just more insecure than women.
The men in the study, of course.

Re: Funny women rule!
Sun, February 5, 2006 - 10:28 AMThat's what they were talking about though. The laughing part. Men want the women to laugh at *their* jokes, not make their own.
I have actually found a lot of the time that men that I don't know will compete with me after I make a joke or two. Like they can't let me be the funny one. They have to be. It's strange. -

Re: Funny women rule!
Mon, February 6, 2006 - 10:21 AMNo, there is a difference between banter and competition. Like, I'll make a joke and they will try to make it *better* instead of making their own joke. Usually when they try to make it better, they've ruined my joke. I think it's subconsciously.
It's annoying whatever it is. Just let me be funny, you be funny, and it's all good. :) -

If a woman cracks you up, there is no way that you'd want to date her? What about after that three month phase when the purely physical attraction part of a relationship fades. What do you have there? Don't you want someone interesting, or would you rather just have someone who finds you interesting? -

Re: Funny women rule!
Tue, February 7, 2006 - 9:46 PMthis thought is partially baked so please bear with me...
or just skip this post...
but it seems to me, that funniness itself isn't necessarily sexy. i mean, think about it: what is sexy? it's different for different people. some people might find a person who tells jokes sexy when s/he is actually telling the jokes, or might find that person sexy when they're being flirtatious, or might find that same person sexy when they're in the bath. a person can be sexy at certain times, but not others. so, a woman can be telling jokes and a guy can think, damn, that's not sexy, but the same woman might be giving him a lap dance and he's like, damn, THAT'S sexy! i cannot for one second believe that a guy would be turned off by an otherwise sexy (by his definition) woman just b/c she cracks jokes. and if he is, the hell with him.
uh, does that make sense?
and also, there are a lot of comedians, as well as comediennes, that aren't "sexy," by standard vogue/gq definitions. sometimes, that's WHY they're funny - b/c they use their looks as a foil. now if you're talking leading men/women, chances are, they're gonna be sexy by standard definitions.
one last half-baked thought: one day, if you're lucky, you meet someone who thinks you are the cat's pajamas (nod to kidda), whether or not they ever were attracted to anyone even remotely like you before. they always thought funny women were totally unsexy, then they met you and WOW! or, they always thought white guys in suits were completely unappealing, then they met you! etc. -
-
Re: Funny women rule!
Tue, February 7, 2006 - 11:30 PMActually I think funny women are great friends & lovers. I was primarily referring to the famous ones not being particularly sexy in their roles as comediennes. Lucille Ball was a very attractive woman, but she never played that card while she was acting goofy.
A few of the women in the Mary Tyler Moore troupe were funny and sexy, actually, but they weren't "comediennes", particularly.
"Fun in bed" doesn't ONLY refer to passion & sexiness, at least for me.

Re: Funny women rule!
Wed, February 8, 2006 - 9:42 AM<but she never played that card while she was acting goofy. >
Not as her character. Lucy Arnaz and Lucille Ball are not the same person. One is only a character.
But the thing about the article that got to me, is that it said that men date the funny ones and marry, or considered seriousl relationships with the ones who laugh at *theur* jokes. That's the part that puzzled me -

Re: Funny women rule!
Wed, February 8, 2006 - 1:34 PMIn all honesty, I don't believe that all gender generalities are inaccurate. Some have been "trained" into us by custom and culture and those particular qualities that tend to demean or subjugate both men and women should be eliminated.
On the other hand, I will never believe in the ultimate "sameness" of men and women. I have too many experiences in witnessing the differences in the way men and women process information, react to situations and view reality. I haven't the knowledge to define or analyze it, even marginally, but I have absolutely no doubt that the suggestions of Yin & Yang, or whatever various ancient concepts of Masculine & Feminine energy are real and true phenomena.
As a result, we have funny gender specific behavior to greater or lesser degrees. I kind of like it (until I am totally befuddled by some "female" response), but it comes with living on this planet . Live & learn.

Re: Funny women rule!

sounds a lot like "boys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses" which, really, a bunch of crap. Frankly, me likee the funny ladies, and don't mistake the fact that I'm not married to one as telling, as this is simply because I'm not married.
This article just sounds like another in the long line of articles designed to freak the genders out: "Women Want Sensitive CryBabies!" "Men Hate Women Whose Second Toe Is Longer Than The Big Toe!" yadda.

OH AMEN, BROTHER!!! TESTIFY!!!
thank you thank you thank you thank you tbo. you have hit the nail on the head. now can you please make them STOP!?!?!?
it doesn't matter how many studies anybody does - none of it, and none of the stereotypes, and nothing on the long list of qualities you want/need/must have in a mate, matter when you meet the person who is the right combination for you. i'm sick of the tactics that insist men and women are separate species, or from different planets, or whatev. sure, men and women are different. and every man i know is different from every other man i know. YAWN. can we talk about what we have in common instead? or better yet, just shut up about the whole thing?
let's tell jokes instead! so, this priest, this rabbi and this minister walk into a bar. they walk up to the bartender and he says, "what is this, some kind of joke?" ba- da- duh. thank you. don't forget to tip your waitress. -

Re: Funny women rule!
Wed, February 8, 2006 - 7:28 PMActually, Sue. I am quite enjoying this conversation. It is so rare to get to yap on tribe about peoples feelings on different topics. even if people don't agree on every level, it's nice to have a convo instead of the random stuff, and games all of the time. (which I also enjoy completely!) I sometimes worry that debate is a lost art.
On another note, I had no idea about this one! <"Men Hate Women Whose Second Toe Is Longer Than The Big Toe!">
CRAP! I am really fighting a losing battle here.
Funny, smart, long toes....damn. I'm screwed!
Now, what you said Hanafi, about things how we as people are taught to fit into certain gender roles is right on. I usually am attracted to men who fight against these role. I like men who can be a bit femmy. I think it's hot! I enjoy guys who will laugh at my jokes and make jokes themselve for me to laugh at.
I am not saying that I believe in this article, nor fully do I disregard it. I just wanted a good convo, and I think I got it! Thank you! :)

Wed, February 8, 2006 - 8:22 PM>Actually, Sue. I am quite enjoying this conversation.<
i had a feeling you would say that. didn't mean to do you out of your conversation. it's just a sensitive topic for me. i am really tired of the way people lean on stereotypes and "that's how it's always been" as an excuse for continuing stupid behavior (not just in this context, but in others as well). for all the unending brouhaha about how men and women are different, and the endless studies and surveys and statistics, it doesn't seem that we are any better at getting along (still a 50% divorce rate in the u.s.?). so what has it served? no purpose at all. just seems that more and more we are convinced that we are different species.
this truly sickens me b/c i see the split b/w men and women as the base cause of every problem we have in this world. that is my belief; i'm not interested in debating it, but if you guys want to, go right ahead, and i'll bow out.

Um...Sue, you are ALWAYS stereotyping men. You know that I have gotten on your ass about it several times. This is really just an innocent convo.
You cannot deny that men and women are trained to live up to stereotypes. It's a fact. It is the smart and free thinkers who choose to NOT live up to these. They think for themselves.
It is okay to disagree with people and have them disagree with you. it's all perfectly okay. If everyone agreed, wouldn't it be an awfully dull world? -

Re: Funny women rule!
Thu, February 9, 2006 - 2:23 AMBetty Freidan was a remarkable force in this world. When she first appeared, I didn't buy the feminine mystique drill in lots of ways. In actual fact, the world was remarkably different then. Not necessarily better, but dramatically different and decidedly worse for women in the work force.
My mom was an entrepreneur who seemed to defy all the conventions that women were supposedly subject to. She took the model of Lohman's (women's discount clothing outlet), transferred it to giftwares and established a successful business. That was in the 50's, before there were any other stores of its kind. I had no idea that she was a pioneer in many ways. I took her behavior as normal. I couldn't understand why women said they were unable to progress in the business world. She did it, so why couldn't they? As a result, I wasn't particularly sympathetic to the women's movement.
It wasn't until many, many years later that she told me about the discrimination and harassment she experienced.
Meanwhile, the world was changing and it was my female friends who were at the point. They didn't seem to stop as a result of my disapproval.
You would not recognize the world as it was. Believe me. I'm still catching up. At the same time, the pendulum has swung a bit too far in some ways, while not far enough in others.
So, what does this have to do with funny women and the discussion here? From my point of view, it has to do with how gender roles-descriptions-stereotypes-behavior have evolved and continue to evolve. How we fit certain patterns and don't fit them. How we should or shouldn't, can or won't.
Someone I greatly respect once said: "Concepts are dead." There don't appear to be many things that aren't subject to change and holding on to something too tightly just might result in missing the real story as it developes.
Meanwhile, journalistic hacks churn out all manner of contentless prattle. I get the image of someone smoking a joint and wandering off into an imaginary realm, drawing flawed conclusions and then selling them as fact; all to be forgotten shortly thereafter.

Re: Funny women rule!
Thu, February 9, 2006 - 2:38 AM"Concepts are dead."
You wanna know something funny? I was not even aware for some time that women were treated all that differently from men until I joined tribe! Fer reals! I mean, yeah, I saw it a bit, but not to the extent I do now that I hang out with "normal" people.
I have always been in the underground scenes. Scenes where men talk to women like people and women talk to men in the same manner. I suppose that I was in a way sheltered. I'm sure that I have been.
I supose that is why I like to talk about this sort of thing. I hear it, and I don't buy it. If it's been written about, it means to me that somewhere, someone is talking about this shit, and I want to know more.
Not because I want to buy into their way, I need to know everything before I can make a valid judgement. It's how I roll.
Can't hate something if you don't have the fact, right?
Damn. Was I babbling again? -

Re: Funny women rule!
Thu, February 9, 2006 - 10:57 AMJust had to copy this one over.
"Why do we want women be like men all the time? Why do we ask: Why aren't women as funny as men, as clever as men, as tough as men, as active as men, as successful as men...? Why do we have to compare women against men to establish their worth? It seems to me like we still do not value women's unique qualities enough that they need to be doing the same things men do to be good enough. Why don't we hear about men fighting for acknowledgement that they can be as beautiful as women, as sensitive as women, as sexy as women, as attentive as women, as nurturing as women...? And why do people call women "not very clever" or "doesn't think for themselves" simply because they don't tell good jokes?(I'm skipping issues like who determine what's funny, and whether or not it is true that women can't tell good jokes)And even if it is "in fact" that women are dumb, what makes it such a problem? As I recall Ellis's comment, he's not bothered by not being a clever comedian. It also reminds me of video chips I saw on the internet in which guys slam themselves into moving trucks with their motorcycle. Tell me if that isn't dumb, but not being funny is. Yet those guys are so proud of their acts that they put it up onto the internet, open for appreciation. You gotta admire their ego. But please... let us be, in whatever form we are, we just want to be happy. we may laugh at a few jokes if that makes us happy. we may even try our hand on the art of telling jokes. If you don't like our jokes, that's ok. But please don't say we can't be funny or we're not very clever. you can never be sure."
