Maybe it's because of my Irish heritage, but I always seem to feel a lot better while grieving by telling stories of the people who've past.

Anyone have any good Jared stories to tell? How did you meet?

Of course, I met Jared on tribe, but we first started our rapport because I'd started the Seattle History tribe, and he was the first member. The first night, we were the only two members and started sharing ghost stories that we'd googled. He started getting all scared because his hall light had burned out and he was all alone in his apartment. I never delete mail, so I;d liek to go back and look for that convo. It went on for about an hour and a half of us trying to scare one another.

One of my other favorites may not translate well into text, but I;ll try. We decided that for dinner we were going to have potatoes au gratin from a box and a can of cranberry sauce. Oh it was gooood! He ate his all really quickly, and i still had some. I was down to my last fork full, but we were having a conversation. I was standing there with the last bite of of potatoes on my fork, but kept talking. He was looking back and forth between my face and my fork. Finally, he just grabbed my wrist and put my fork in his mouth! I stopped talking and we both just sort of looked at each other. He got this look like he was in big trouble, and I just doubled over laughing. A silly story, yeah, but his expression was priceless! It was like he'd no control over himself when he ate it and was waiting for is punishment!

Another of my favorites was the first time we hung out irl. I was giving him my old turn table, so he came by to pick it up. We decided to go out for drinks, and started at Shorty's, played a bit of pin ball, then decided to go check out Jules Mae's which had recently reopened. We were sitting at the far end of the bar, and the place was pretty dead. We talked for hours, until these guys came along to play pool. We kept having to move out of their way as to not get hit in the back with their pool cues. Eventually, one of the guys said "Why don't you guys move down the bar a little?" Jared said "Oh yeah, make the Indian move! That's what always happens!" And he stomped away and sat down a few bar stools up. The guys just sort of looked at us and didn't know what to say about it. I started laughing and went to join him. This is when I decided that he HAD to be a friend of mine!

Hahaha! Too cute. I love these.

My stories are not as interesting as yours. But on one sMACdown, I remember he bought a round of drinks for everyone. I can't even remember which place that was. But there was an upstairs and we all just sat down and hung out. I think that was where I met Kimpulsive, too.

I loved all the bantering on the Mac tribe. Yesterday I went and looked at some old threads and I was just laughing and laughing. He was always such a good sport when it came to my very smart alecky posts! Hee.

One time FP invited me into a private dating/relationships-themed tribe because a couple people were talking about me in there.

He PMed me with "come look what they're saying!!"

Heh. That little stunt could have gone way south, but it ended up just being funny! And of course, no one could be mad at him.

    I'm still in that tribe.

Do you remember when he posted that link that automatically joined us into that Oral Sex tribe? It was hilarious. We had a great time cracking jokes in that tribe. Everyone he tricked into joining was such a good sport about it.

Jared really helped me out one time a while back when I was working on a documentary for the History Channel about Lewis and Clark and their time at Fort Clatsop. I really needed some contacts and he helped guide me towards some of the tribal secretaries that could help me dig up the history I needed. I remember talking to my show producer and saying "I'm waiting for my friend Fuckerpants to call me back, I think he can help us." and my boss looking at me and saying "We're relying on a guy named Fuckerpants to help get us history?" But yeah Fuckerpants really did know his history and I knew he would be able to hook me up with the right folks. He was so excited to be able to help me even by just telling me who to go to.

One afternoon, not too long after I had joined tribe, FP posted a notice on the Seattle tribe that he had a few passes for Motorcycle Diaries at the Seven Gables. I zipped off a note to him and it seemed that I had barely hit send before my phone rang and we were planning our meet up at the theater.

We had a long wait in line, exchanged histories & philosophies and formed a pretty good bond right then and there.

Somehow he learned that the long version of "Pak", is actually Bapak, which I explained was reserved for 'Real' Respected elders and that I was fine with just being Pak. Nevertheless, whenever we were together, which was not enough, he would always call me Bapak.

What a good guy. I will miss him.

After I showed him the brilliant Guitar Wolf movie, Wild Zero, Pantsy too to calling me "Hanako" after the main girl zombie love interest. About a month later, we found out that they were coming to town, so of course, we went!

The place was packed, and like the gentleman that he was (or could be) he kept making sure that I was standing in a place where i could see clearly. Then someone set off a stink bomb, and half of the people ran out of the club. For some reason, it didn't affect either of us, and I suggested that we try to move up closer to the stage. We squeezed our way through the crowd up to the pit. We were in there for a few minutes and he asked me if I wanted to step back as I kept getting pushed by people. I said "NO! I wanna stay up here!!!" He said "Really??? I've never been to a show with a girl who doesn't mind that!" I told him that I was serious, that I was okay, and for him to enjoy himself. His eyes got so wide, and his smile really broad! He said "COOL!!!!" And jumped away into the crowd! he was right up front dancing and jumping around maybe 2 feet from where Guitar Wolf was playing.
After the show, we wne tot the Mars bar for drinks and he must have thanked me for not making him stand back about 5 times! He was so adorable!

Two weeks later, Bass Wolf passed away. You can be sure that Jared is throwing back some beers with him right now!

I am so sorry. Just caught up on all the latest threads about him. Damn.

He was one of those people on Tribe that I always wanted to meet, but never did, and now it's too late.

I met Jared in 1997 when we were both wage slaves at Amazon.com. He actually hired me into one of my jobs there, after I confessed in the interview that I was really hungover and still drunk from the night before. For awhile we were just coworkers, and our relationship consisted of coming up with imaginative ways to insult each other. "Good morning, Ass Cabbage," he'd say. "Hello there, Fuckerpants," I replied. And that, my friends, was how a nickname was born.

      WOW.. Nice to meet you.

I can't remember the exact details, but one night I was out somewhere and ran into Jared. I turned to the person I was with and was about to do the formal introduction thing when I realized I had forgotten his given name. I can remember the moment of panic and realization that I just couldn't say: "This is Fuckerpants. Fuckerpants, this is ..." The rest is a blur, although I do remember he and I laughing about it later.

Aww so awesome that you gave him that name. I always loved using it. I got so used to saying it I would forget and call him that even when talking to someone who didn't have a clue what I was talking about. When I went up to the Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada to Haida Gwai Jared told me to look for this world famous totem carver that he had met before. I found out where his shop was and went to check out the gigantic totem he was carving for artist Damien Hirst. When I walked in the shop I told him Fuckerpants had sent me and he stopped and looked at me and laughed his ass off. Then I told him it was Jared the guy he had met in Seattle and he laughed even harder when he realized who I meant and welcomed me into his shop. When I showed FP the photos of his shop he was so excited. We were talking on the phone and he kept saying " You have no idea how lucky you are that you got to see and touch his work up close like that." I told him I knew it was because of him that I even got to do that. He laughed and said, "I can't believe you went to Reg's shop and told him Fuckerpants sent you. Hilarious!"

These stories are helping me deal with my grief.
Helping me remember the good times.
And that he would want us to go on & enjoy life.
He was a GREAT example of that!

Whenever I called him, he would answer, "What's up indin?"
            Ha!
His last text message to me was, "Red, wrath, & beyond...I have a gift certificate!"

            Haha!

Yes, that's how I feel too. Telling the good stories instead of sitting around and only feeling sad is something that i believe Jared wouldn't want from us. You know he'd want to hear these stories. For me, telling the stories is a way of respecting him.

Besides, he was so damned funny, it's hard to think of him without thinking of something hilarious he said or did!

I still need to go to Taco Bell in his memory.

Even though I joined Tribe in 2003, I never really paid much attention to it. That's why I'm so blown away to discover the enormous community of people who knew and loved Jared. I'm devastated by his death but it's a huge consolation to know that at the end of his life, he was part of such a great community of people who saw his true worth and recognized his intelligence, sensitivity and heart.
