Our Childhood

According to today's regulators and bureaucrats, those of us who were kids in the 50's, 60's, 70's and early 80's probably shouldn't have survived, because...

Our baby cots were covered with brightly coloured lead-based paint which was promptly chewed and licked.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, or latches on doors or cabinets and it was fine to play with pans.

When we rode our bikes, we wore no helmets, just flip flops and fluorescent 'clackers' on our wheels.

As children, we would ride in cars with no seat belts or airbags - riding in the passenger seat was a treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle and it tasted the same.

We ate dripping sandwiches, bread and butter pudding and drank fizzy pop with sugar in it, but we were never overweight because we were always outside playing.

We shared one drink with four friends, from one bottle or can and no-one actually died from this.

We would spend hours building go-carts out of scrap and then went top speed down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes!

After running into stinging nettles a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were back before it got dark. No one was able to reach us all day and no one minded.

We did not have Playstations or X-Boxes, no video games at all. No 99 channels on TV, no DVD movies, no surround sound, no mobile phones, no personal computers, no Internet chatrooms.

We had friends - we went outside and found them.

We played elastics and street rounders, and sometimes that ball really hurt.

We fell out of trees, got cut and broke bones and teeth, and there were no lawsuits. They were accidents. We learned not to do the same thing again.

We had fights, punched each other hard and got black and blue, and we learned to get over it.

We walked to friends’ homes. We also, believe it or not, walked to school. We didn't rely on mummy or daddy to drive us to school, which was just round the corner.

We made up games with sticks and tennis balls and ate live stuff, and although we were told it would happen, we did not have very many eyes out, nor did the live stuff live inside us forever.

We rode bikes in packs of 7 and wore our coats by only the hood.

Our actions were our own. Consequences were expected. The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke a law was unheard of. They actually sided with the law. Imagine that!

This generation has produced some of the best risk-takers and problem solvers and inventors ever. The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas. We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how to deal with it all. And if you're one of them, congratulations!

Pass this on to others who have had the luck to grow up as real kids, before lawyers and government regulated our lives, for our own good.

Pantsy Stories

Maybe it's because of my Irish heritage, but I always seem to feel a lot better while grieving by telling stories of the people who've past.

Anyone have any good Jared stories to tell? How did you meet?

Of course, I met Jared on tribe, but we first started our rapport because I'd started the Seattle History tribe, and he was the first member. The first night, we were the only two members and started sharing ghost stories that we'd googled. He started getting all scared because his hall light had burned out and he was all alone in his apartment. I never delete mail, so I;d liek to go back and look for that convo. It went on for about an hour and a half of us trying to scare one another.

One of my other favorites may not translate well into text, but I;ll try. We decided that for dinner we were going to have potatoes au gratin from a box and a can of cranberry sauce. Oh it was gooood! He ate his all really quickly, and i still had some. I was down to my last fork full, but we were having a conversation. I was standing there with the last bite of of potatoes on my fork, but kept talking. He was looking back and forth between my face and my fork. Finally, he just grabbed my wrist and put my fork in his mouth! I stopped talking and we both just sort of looked at each other. He got this look like he was in big trouble, and I just doubled over laughing. A silly story, yeah, but his expression was priceless! It was like he'd no control over himself when he ate it and was waiting for is punishment!

I was thinking of you yesterday. I saw "Who is Nilsson? (And Why Is Everyone Talking About Him)? at the NoisePop Film Fest yesterday. I learned some stuff about him I never knew. Like I thought he'd learned piano as a wee child and I never knew that he played guitar. It had lots of good TV footage of him. It was weird to see his voice coming out of his face because I'd never before seen any moving pictures of him.

Hey kids...I had to unsub from this tribe for a while there...much postage for me to read...
but I will be back in Seattle next week for a visit before I start my bitchin' new job on the 26th. I posted about this in my tribeblog, but didn't get much of a ping.
Gonna be in town Tuesday afternoon to Friday morning, and would love some company as I tour my old haunts...particularly if you're not a 9-5'er who can hang during the day. :)
I'll be staying in lower queen anne, relying on transit/cabs...and can buy a round for any and all hangers-out. :)

thursday night i get in around 9pm, so i won't even try to perform, but will probably try to head to the burlesque show anyway.

friday night jake gets in sometime, and i go and do some balboa/swing dancing (competing in only one dance contest this time). then drinkies! i'll meet up with you guys probably around midnight.

Christmas in Baja!

Jrat and I are in Cabo san Lucas. We had a burly day of kayaking, snorkeling and beach cliff climbing yesterday. Then we had fish tacos and strawberry daquiris.

I know there was a big fun dinner in Seattle, but I was too jealous to finish reading that long long thread. Can I still get the short version of the festivities and other cool things that happened?

Brown was hospitalized with pneumonia at Emory Crawford Long Hospital on Sunday and died of conjunctive heart failure around 1:45 a.m. Monday, said his agent, Frank Copsidas of Intrigue Music.

He initially seemed fine at the hospital and even told people that he planned to be on stage in New York on New Year's Eve, Copsidas said.

Brown was one of the major musical influences of the past 50 years. From Mick Jagger to Michael Jackson, David Bowie to Public Enemy, Brown's rapid-footed dancing, hard-charging beats and heartfelt yet often unintelligible vocals changed the musical landscape. He was to rhythm and dance music what Bob Dylan was to lyrics.

"He was an innovator, he was an emancipator, he was an originator. Rap music, all that stuff came from James Brown," entertainer Little Richard, a longtime friend of Brown's, told MSNBC.

"James Brown changed music," said Rev. Al Sharpton, who toured with him in the 1970s and imitates his hairstyle to this day.

"He made soul music a world music," Sharpton said. "What James Brown was to music in terms of soul and hip-hop, rap, all of that, is what Bach was to classical music. This is a guy who literally changed the music industry. He put everybody on a different beat, a different style of music. He pioneered it."

Brown's classic singles include "Papa's Got A Brand New Bag," "(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine," "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Say It Loud - I'm Black and I'm Proud," a landmark 1968 statement of racial pride.

When is good? I finish finals on the 12th, and I'm not planning to go home for the holidays. I think the 15/16/17 weekend is best, since people who are going home will probably be gone the following weekend. But which day? Or a weeknight? Or...?

It seems I'm on the hook to make latkes (they have to be fresh, so the mess will be made in the host's kitchen). What other holiday faves are out there?

I'd been worried that I wouldn't find a copy for Yet's party, since I hadn't realized it was a few years old.

Checked Best Buy online yesterday and the Everett Mall was listed as stocking it but 1) their inventory thingee has been flaky before and 2) no other Best Buys did.

Last night, the power at Casa Genghis went out and was out through the early morning. Went into work because we have a client with problems now, only to find the drive to Bothell had been in vain because the office was closed.

Tried a Fred Meyer - no Hammer.

Tried the Everett Best Buy - HAPPY HAPPY, JOY JOY - they had the Hebrew Hammer.

I haven't found a Muppet Christmas Carol but HH is more important....

The event: A winter snowshoe adventure and overnight campout. K.B. (our fearless expedition leader here where I work, and a veteran member of The Mountaineers) and I will be teaming up a winter camping overnight trip, probably at the Alpental backcountry area.
Carpools will be available.
Snow cave and tent space can be negotiated. (Help dig, provide food or gear, etc.)
Cooking can be negotiated for cost of food or fuel.
Other winter camping supplies (10 essentials, ground mats, sleeping bags, shovels, snowshoes, etc.) are your own responsibility.

This is not a car-camping trip, involves lugging at least 20 pounds of wintering gear across backcountry trails for more than 3 miles, and building either a snow cave or tent-breakwall at the campsite. The potential exists for avalanche and/or personal injury (just a friendly reminder that this is backcountry, not the KoA.) I don't say that to scare anyone away, just to remind people that while it's going to be a really fun trip, it's also a trip that means watching out for danger.

Is anyone interested in a winter camping trip where you'll probably end up learning a few things about snow, avalanche safety, and emergency shelters? (K.B. is currently taking the Avalanche Rescue course with The Mountaineers, and is a certifed MOFA <mountaineering oriented first aid> instructor.)

Since I hate going to the gym, I actually made myself watch (and follow) an exercise video. And then my knee started getting all achy. My mean old doctor says it's because of the exercise video. He says I have to bike or swim. It's too cold to swim in my outdoor pool. So in order to avoid going to the gym, I need you to come fix my bike! If I don't get all worn out watching you fix my bike, maybe we can even go ride around Greenlake afterwards. And maybe some other monkeys will come, and we can get hot cocoa, and, hey, weren't we planning this a few weeks ago?

Decisions, decisions

Not quite as intense as Annetastic's job search but I"ve got a big choice to make, fast.

Most of my career has been medical programming but the past few years have been spent doing insurance programming. I've thought about switching back and a former coworker who I like a LOT is asking me if I want to come back to a company we both used to work for and work for her.

There are several up sides to this, the down sides being my commute would change from Snohomish <--> Bothell to Snohomish <--> Issaquah. And it feeling a little funny going back to a previous employer.

Yikes! Any comments?

All the monkeys like to ride their bikes

So it seems that everyone with a bike is down with the idea of a group ride. Not some awful, 50 mile, hill-bound trek. What we're talking about is a nice flat ride around a park, probably followed up with food and beer (the essentials for properly finishing a bike ride.)

We know the WHAT, WHY, and WHO; now we need to work on the WHEN and WHERE.

WHAT: A bike ride, and pre-ride repair party.
WHY: Because some people need stuff fixed, and riding bikes is fun.
WHO: The monkeys.

WHEN is good for everyone? I'm free on Friday after 2pm, or on the weekends. Weekend mornings would be the best time, IMO. Late morning ride, and a picnic lunch in whatever park we ride at.

WHERE? I don't know the downtown/west side parks, so start making suggestions, folks!

So, as I need a drink, and it is Wednesday night... I was thinking that a lovely return to Girls Night Out is in order. Anne? Paige? Any of the other ladies?
I should be out at around 8ish, so I am good to go after that. And boy howdy do I need a drinky!

I am sorry I am out of town, but look you guys, Annetastic is sayin she's offering a party time to celebrate with her. Lets get offa our behind ends and let her know who is going to show at the Mars with her. I mean we can not let this gal be there alone? What kind of people are we? Please show and celebrate with Anne on her Birthday. Someone needs to step up and help get this going - baloons, cigars, hats etc. I am out of town but am hoping somebody will step up and help honcho this happy day......?????

I'm not sure what I want to do!

I am thinking karaoke on Saturday. But where? I don;t drive and I don't want to make anyone feel that they need to drive me around. Where is a good karaoke place that is not too far from the downtown area? Anyone know?
